Dear GEP-Ed, AESS-
Please join us today for the last webinar on international environmental security issues! In the season-ending episode of The World Goes to Hell Monthly, we find our heroes addressing the complicated scientific, environmental, political, and ethical issue of geo-engineering. What happens when we have the potential to purposefully alter the earth’s climate? Just because we can, does that mean we should? Do we use our superpowers for good or evil, and do we even know the difference? I have three experts ready to tackle this problem in the context of a future geo-engineering attempt by a wealthy developing nation. Sign-in information is below, free to listen, and all webinars are archived at www.securityandsustainabilityforum.org for future use in courses, lectures, etc. -Beth _____________________________ Elizabeth L. What are the risks and potential for unintended consequences? Is it moral to mess with Mother Nature? University of Colorado Philosophy Professor, Benjamin Hale, will add an ethics view to the Benjamin Hale Geoengineering webinar. Benjamin is also co-editor of the journal Ethics, Policy & Environment and Vice-President of the International Society for Environmental Ethics and was the Director of the Center for Values and Social Policy at the University Registration Geoengineering February 4, 2014 1:15 to 2:15 PM EST The panel also includes: Wil Burns Wil Burns: Wil directs Johns Hopkins' MS in Energy Policy and Climate Program serves as the Co-Chair of the International Environmental Law Committee of the American Branch of the International Law Association, and is the President of the Association of Environmental Studies and Sciences. In this book, eleven prominent authorities on climate change consider the legal, policy, and philosophical issues presented by geoengineering. The book asks: "When, if ever, are decisions to embark on potentially risky climate modification projects justified?" David Keith David Keith: David is the Gordon McKay Professor of Applied Physics, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) and Professor of Public Policy, Harvard Kennedy School, Harvard University David is best known for his work on solar geoengineering: strategies to counter rising global temperatures by reducing the amount of sunlight that reaches Earth and its atmosphere. In 2013, David's book, A Case for Climate Engineering, details a controversial strategy for slowing climate change and buy society time to curb emissions and instill more sustainable behavior. Elizabeth Chalecki This webinar is the fifth in the International Environmental Security Series moderated by Elizabeth Chalecki, Visiting Research Fellow with the Stimson Center and author of Environmental Security. a Guide to the Issues, convenes an expert panel for each webinar and puts them on the spot to answer important questions about each issue.
