Dear Kirsten: There are several good accounts of this. The best one is Lars-Goren Engfelt's "From Stockholm to Johannesburg and Beyond" http://www.government.se/sb/d/574/a/129913
Also, there is a good account of this in: Angela Churie and Elisabeth Corell's Global Challenges: Furthering the Multilateral Process for Sustainable Development http://www.amazon.com/Global-Challenges-Multilateral-Sustainable-Development/dp/1874719519/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1360768532&sr=1-2 And finally, we discuss it in another book: Chasek, Pamela S. and Richard Sherman. Ten Days in Johannesburg: A Negotiation of Hope. Cape Town: Struik Publishers, 2004. Regards, Pam Pamela S. Inspite of reading several textbook on the Stockholm-Rio process including the excellent 5th edition of Chasek, Downie and Brown: Global Environmental Politics, one question remains: Who were the lead countries behind the Stockholm conference in 1972. Chasek et al. mentions that the conference was supported by the US, but was the US lead state? I wonder about that. Does anyone have an answer? Maybe someone out there with even more grey hair than mine even attended the conference? Thank you in advance.
