Climate Change and Human Rights: A Common Research Agenda?
Consequences of climate change are increasingly considered to be a
human rights concern. In this respect, the living conditions of
vulnerable populations affected by environmental damages and
destruction, the situation of climate refugees, and peoples lack of
access to safe drinking water and sanitation have received particular
attention by human rights scholars and practitioners. As a result,
demands for guaranteeing human rights have entered international
environmental law and, vice versa, the right to a healthy environment
has become a recognized human rights standard.
This panel seeks to further explore the common ground climate change
and human rights scholars have in their research agendas. What are the
analytical benefits of investigating environmental consequences from a
human rights perspective? Does it provide new insights into how
various actors, governmental and non-governmental ones, share the
responsibility to protect humans from environmental challenges? Does a
comprehensive analysis that highlights issues from both perspectives
enhance international cooperation and the allocation of resources in
this regard? Does a common research ground contribute to normative
debates of (inter-generational) equity and (international) justice?
We invite empirical and normative papers that establish the link
between climate change and human rights. Case studies and policy
analyzes are also welcome. Papers will be discussed by Dr. Anja Mihr
(Utrecht University) and Prof. Richard P. Hiskes (University of
Connecticut). Paper proposals with a title, an abstract of no more
than 300 words and short information about the institutional
affiliation of the author are invited to be sent to Dr. Andrea
Schapper ([email protected]) and Prof. Dr. Markus Lederer
([email protected]) no later than Friday, 25 May 2012.
