I thought I might just post a followup to the below, should anyone
have a similar problem later on.

We ended up doing a tiny custom WMS-implementation in Python serving
our images in CRS:1 (using Pillow and Flask).
Bending the rendering engine and projection-libraries seemed to
introduce more hassle than the value gained.
The 40400 EPSG/SRID/CRS was - as indicated in my previous posts -
almost enough though.
