The idea to implement a custom protocol handlerstill seems a viable option though. I don't remember where the URL validation might happen, but I'm guessing it could be either in the UI or in the ResourcePool. If it's the former, a custom panel can be plugged in (see StoreEditPanel and subclasses) but if it's elsewhere some changes will have to be implemented, I presume along with some interface/hint to figure out that the connection string is not really a URL nor a local file (so core change, to go along with some new interface or similar approach).
