As far as I know I'm just hitting the cluster by letting the load balancer
spread the calls. I'm just hitting the central hub endpoint and doing
pretty generic rest calls for creating and deleting layers. It's set up as
a Master/Slave cluster with shared Data Directory. To try to keep the
cluster in sync, we wrote our own script that manually issues a full
configuration reload. After looking over the suggested documentation a bit,
I learned that the "internal catalog is kept pinned in memory by the
GeoServer." Could this be why even after manually deleting all of the
layer/style files from the data directory that the GeoServer is still
looking for them and crashing, since it thinks according to its internal
memory that they still exist even though I deleted them. I thought
performing the reload of the catalog and configuration would flush/reload
that memory, but if so it is still getting hung up on something... At this
point I'll likely just perform a clean install of the GeoSever, but if you
have any more insight, that would be helpful. Thank you!

Hello,
I was trying to both delete and create many styles and layers in one swoop
with a script. This was being done against GeoServer 2.8.2 with a
4-instance cluster.
There is not enough description here to help. How are you hitting the
cluster? Specific node or just letting the load balancer spread the calls?
Is there anything keeping the 4 geoservers in synch (a clustering module
like jms clustering or jdbcconfig)?
