Hi Gavin,
in 2.7.x there is basically no way to have channel selection and
transparency at the moment.

In 2.8.x it _might_ work, but completely untested I'm afraid, assuming you
do enable jai-ext. If you have a 2.8.x release try adding
-Dorg.geotools.coverage.jaiext.enabled=true
as a startup parameter of the java virtual machine.
