Hi, I rather believe that the request never goes to Geoserver because the ü –character is somehow badly formatted by the client and SAX parser never sends it forward. Your client can for example claim in the headers or in the beginning of XML body that contents are encoded as UTF-8 but u-umlaut is really not encoded in UTF-8.
org.xml.sax.SAXParseException: Invalid byte 1 of 1-byte UTF-8 sequence. The following GetFeature works OK for me with Geoserver 2.8 for the topp:states featureretype.
