Hi,

first of all note that the print module for 2.5.2 is still based on the old
mapfish-print 1.2 library.
In the upcoming 2.6 we have upgraded to 2.1, which has many new options,
but from what I remember it still doesn't support what you are asking for.

We have an experimental release of mapfish-print we use internally for our
customers projects that supports this (look here:
https://github.com/geosolutions-it/mapfish-print/wiki/Legend-fitting).
Unfortunately this functionality has not been ported to the official
release yet due to lack of funding.
