Hi Brian,
QGIS uses SLD version 1.1 when it exports. GeoServer only officially
supports SLD 1.0 (although quite a bit of 1.1 stuff also works). This is
the first starting issue that you should be aware of.

Also as you've noticed, GeoServer doesn't support the full range of Well
Known Symbol Names that QGIS does; QGIS offers extra ones that aren't in
the spec. GeoServer's list is:
http://docs.geoserver.org/stable/en/user/styling/sld-extensions/pointsymbols.html

I opened a JIRA ticket suggesting implementing the extra's quite a while
back - http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/GEOS-5613

I'd suggest that you instead use custom SLD's; hopefully the reference
should work fine.

Cheers,
Jonathan
