Ok good to know. This must be a problem with my setup then (behind apache as a 
reverse proxy). Instead of
OpenLayers.loadURL("http://ian01.geog.psu.edu:80/geoserver…
I get
OpenLayers.loadURL("http://localhost:8082/geoserver
But it doesn't sound like this is Jay's problem.
