The problem right now is that Mysql 5.1 isn't the normal Gentoo tree, just 5.0. I say start with the database you plan to use for the next five years. Going with 5.0 at this point doesn't make much sense unless you really want to transition with real production data in the next year. I expect one of the overlays has 5.1 and I'd attempt to use that. What sort of application are you setting up? What sort of Mysql setup are you looking for? Not a lot to go on here.
