I somehow killed the dhcp in my openwrt router and failsafe mode requires a static IP address. Stopping net.eth0 and then running '#ifconfig eth0 up; ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.2' resulted with a 'No route to host' error when telnetting to 192.168.1.1 .
