Personaly, I've never had an ebuild fail due to setting MAKEOPTS=-j>1 but if you want to set -j1 in make.conf, you can regain a significant part of the time loss, by running emerge with --jobs=2 (or more) to run multiple compiles in parallel while keeping each package's compilation single-threaded. -- Neil Bothwick Did you know that eskimos have 17 different words for linguist?
