The fisrt one is the md device number and the second is to explicitly give the raid level. I personally have this line : kernel /boot/kernel-2.6.25-gentoo-r7-v1 root=/dev/md5 md=5,1,/dev/sda5,/dev/sdb5 ro vga=0x323 -- Nicolas Sebrecht
