Thanks. It's OK now.

I recommend doing a full fsck at this point.  The problem might have 
been due to a filesystem error rather than application bug or user 
error.  If you have a separate partition for home:

  touch /home/forcefsck

if you don't have /home on its own partition:

  touch /forcefsck

and reboot.  "Better safe than sorry" ;)
