Yes, XMMS was abandoned upstream a long time ago as unmaintainable. It's hard masked or removed in portage now. I seem to recall way back then some related ebuilds spitting out elog messages that xmms was going away. If I have the story right, portage does not yet support news items that would alert users of stuff like this (paludis does though) after a sync. So the devs are stuck with messages in related ebuilds.
