No, it actually turns out that I have a lot of cruft in /root. Outdated portage snapshots, old kernel images moved from /boot when it filled up, mysql binary log files I weren't sure were essential.. Without all that, it's about 200MB as well. I'll read up to see if I can shrink it and hand the free space over to the LVM, this is getting increasingly bothersome.
