Yes, that's it presumably :

  # NOTE: USB_STORAGE enables SCSI, and 'SCSI disk support'
  # may also be needed; see USB_STORAGE Help for more information
  # CONFIG_USB_STORAGE is not set

So I'll need to compile a new kernel, ie  2.6.20 -> 2.6.22 ,
& enable USB storage.  Thanks for the hint.
