No help

<slaps his forhead> Of course, when the LiveCD boots
the framebuffer comes up in a usable configuration. So
I boot the CD and chroot.

In chroot #fbset -s is completely different than in
"regular" mode.

Here's #fbset -s after the PC boots as usual:

mode "640x480-60"
    # D: 25.171 MHz, H: 31.463 kHz, V: 59.930 Hz
    geometry 640 480 640 480 8
    timings 39729 48 16 33 10 96 2
    rgba 8/0,8/0,8/0,0/0
endmode

Which is quite useless to me.

Here it is in chroot:

mode "1024x768-76"
    # D: 78.653 MHz, H: 59.949 kHz, V: 75.694 Hz
    geometry 1024 768 1024 768 16
    timings 12714 128 32 16 4 128 4
    rgba 5/11,6/5,5/0,0/0
endmode

More like it!

Now if only I can get non-chroot to accept the chroot
modes. So I copied the better mode to the
/etc/fb.modes. But when I give it #fbset
1024x768-76(or anything else) it answers:

/etc/fb.modes:5: syntax error

But line 5(if that's what the '5' refers to) has the
same format in both versions. Neither of which were
touched by human hands.

Anyways I know there's nothing wrong with the card or
monitor. The BIOS? Doesn't seem to hamper the CD.
