Allright, that got me thinking, as that's, more or less, the
basic configuration I've got on one system as well.

It turned out, that I had to remove one of the XkbOptions from
xorg.conf (or Gnome, or both, ... :]).

I had:

        Option     "XkbOptions"        
"grp_led:scroll,grp:alt_shift_toggle,lv3:lwin_switch,altwin:meta_super,compose:rwin"

After I removed grp:alt_shift_toggle from this setting, I can
use Alt+Shift+Tab to cycle backwards just fine.
