Look for charset in his parts. For example:


  This is a multi-part message in MIME format.

  ------=_NextPart_000_0003_01C74C69.D9B87510
  Content-Type: text/plain;
          charset="iso-8859-1"
  Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable


Also, check kmail (Settings/Configure Kmail/Composer/Charset)
