There's no obvious way of doing this with gmplayer, but as you're using
KDE, you can do it with kmplayer by using this script to load the video
file

#!/bin/sh

PLAYER=$(dcop kmplayer-* | head -n 1)
if [[ ${PLAYER} ]]; then
        dcop ${PLAYER} KMediaPlayer openURL "$1"
else
        kmplayer "$1"
        fi
