I am having problems setting the domain name of a new gentoo
installation. I looked at /etc/conf.d/net.examples and tried what
seemed to me what they were looking for such as
DNS_LO="<domain name>"

The host name works, although I would like to not have it wipe out my
resolv.conf. I can set hostname to the fully qualified name using the
hostname command, but gentoo still says unknown domain name when I log
in, so I am not sure this is correct.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

After I set the host name in /etc/conf.d/hostname (so that /etc/init.d/hostname could set it on startup), set the domain name with #domainname, and allowed it to be resolved to 129.0.0.1 in hosts, the log in screen started to show the correct host and domain.

It looks like the login screen displays the FQDN whenever it can be resolved.
