An invalid atom like e.g.: ">=dev-lang/php-4*" will make portage 2.1.2 spit out a warning about it being an invalid atom. I do consider the fact that it completely ignores ">~" atoms rather than spitting out a warning to be a bug. In other words portage is moving towards more validation and unit tests so eventually it will catch all sorts of invalid input... In the mean time `man 5 ebuild` describes valid atoms.
