As a more general learning point I would add (for the benefit of the OP) that 
if you want to emerge a specific package you do:

emerge =category/pacakage-<version>

Available versions can be seen by doing:

ls /usr/portage/dev-lang/php/*.ebuild

Which should list all php ebuilds available.
