Who is talking about making custom changes? Who would make such changes to the main /usr/portage tree anyway? We're talking about a simple user here, no extras, no frills, no adaptations. He just wants to be able to keep a system working also when he syncs just once a year and finds that a working ebuild has been replaced with one that doesn't. No huge buildup of binary packages: if the update was succesful, he can delete all the old versions of the packages for which he has duplicates. > Trust me, Hrm.
