...which is thoroughly and beautifully commented, and came in
very handy when I configured my own system last month.

One distinction which you might not be aware of: there are
typically two ways to run dualhead:

  1) Xinerama: one big "screen".  You can slide windows from
     one monitor to the other.
  2) Multi Screen: two semi-independent displays.  Switching
     virtual desktops on one will not affect the other.

I much prefer (2), but you rarely hear about it these days.
