It seems that it has something to do with the joliet thing again that I used 
to burn it.  From dmesg:

ISO 9660 Extensions: Microsoft Joliet Level 3
ISOFS: changing to secondary root

What does this mean?  Why can't my Gentoo read it?  Something I need to set in 
the kernel?
