Try this:

# rm /etc/make.profile && \ 
ln -s /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2006.1/desktop \
/etc/make.profile

# source /etc/profile

# emerge -uNpv world (or what ever you want to emerge).

Check the USE flags, see if they make sense, add/remove from /etc/make.conf, 
or /etc/portage/package.use, rinse and repeat . . .
