All I did was my usual morning routine.

1.  anacron executes   eix-sync

2.  At a gnome-terminal I typed
      emerge --tree --ask --verbose --newuse --update --deep world

The emerge offered to install totem and gnumeric.

3.  I said yes, expecting totem to succeed and gnumeric to fail, but
    both succeeded.
