Well, yes, it is definitely a dhcpcd problem, as it happens exactly the
same way with either

 # /etc/init.d/net.eth0 start

or simply 

# dhcpcd

In both cases I get 
1/ a connection, 
2/ an unusual verbosity, and 
3/ a freezed console/shell.
