[gentoo-user] Manually compiling a gentoo package

I need to make a change in the code for a gentoo package (pgcalc2) to 
check whether it corrects a problem.  If I simply download it with 
emerge -f pgcalc2, make the correction and then try to finish the 
emerge, it will fail the md5 check.

How can I do this?
