Strictly speaking you don't need it, it will work just as well via ATAPI/SCSI. It's just so convenient that a) you have a separate volume control for the CD input on soundcards and b) playing a CD takes nothing more than a handful of commands (and probably one a second or so to update the play timer), the CD-ROM does everything else on its own. cheers!
