It doesn't keep a log of outgoing connections, but you might check
~/.ssh/known_hosts and see if it says the IP of the host you connected to.

Thanks. I see an IP address there but it's not responding to pings so
one of two things happened:

1) The machine went down for som reason

2) The machine died during a reboot following emerge --deep --update portage

I'm waiting for poeople at the far end to call in.
