Both are installed and make absolutely no difference to the previous
itemized problems and weirdness. I've reinstalled everything and ran
'revdep-rebuild -p'
The system is clean no problems.

No ideas what to try next...

I used to get this problem a couple of versions ago.  I downgraded
until a fresher version came out which had resolved this problem. Sorry I can't help directly with your particular case.
