Hi, I had issues on various packages after an emerge update too. I think it was a baselayout issue. Seems the new baselayout (dunno from what time on) doesn't handle kernels prior to 2.6.14 correctly. Downgrade your portage and see when all for kernel 2.6.12 starts working again.
