First check the distcc-doc in gentoo.org. Then read (/etc/make.conf.example) about setting your CFLAGS. IIRC there's at least three "-march=", "-mcpu=" and "-mtune=". By memory (for example) -mtune=pentium4 give your generated code which is backward compatible with i686. But don't just believe me, check first. Someone else here?
