Gentoo developers have discontinued the support fo bootsplash,
i.e., the gentoo kernel sources do not contain bootsplash patches.
You've to use fbsplash (splashutils) instead..Check out : http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_fbsplash Also note that you can emerge boolsplash-themes, they'll get automatically get converted to splashutils themes..
