Upgrading fixed the problem, as you suggested. To get the upgrade, I added media-gfx/imagemagick to /etc/portage/package.keywords, so my system will now iupgrade to every new version of ImageMagick that has an ebuild. The last automatic upgrade I saw (January 26) was to version 6.2.5.5 to fix security bug #83542. I can't be sure from the ImageMagick ChangeLog that the security fix is also in 6.2.6.0.
