Yes, which is why it was amusing that the site describes "savior" as the
traditional spelling :)

The explanation I heard is that when Noah Webster was compiling his
dictionary, he opted for the simpler spelling whenever there was a
choice. The Webster dictionary became the de facto reference in US
education, so his spelling choices became the norm for Americans.
