Build ncurses manually ("ebuild [package] unpack compile install"). Using ldd, find what libs the application needs, locate them in the ncurses install directory and copy them somewhere handy. Use "LD_PRELOAD=/path/to/lib/libname application" to preload the required library before running your application. Lots on the net about LD_PRELOAD if you need more.
