I had the command right, I was just using the wrong name - I used linux-sources. What can I say ... I'm still learning! :-) This also helped me get rid of a kernel source that had installed when I did an 'emerge --update --deep world' shortly after starting to use Gentoo, but I never did the actual upgrade.
