thanks, but that is pretty un-intuitive. xine uses arrow up/down for the speed... a combination where I do not need to span my fingers over half the keyboard.. But mplayer also jumps forward with mouse wheel up, and backwards with mouse wheel down... the opposite of what I would expect.
