According to https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Project:GNU_Emacs/Developer_guide it is supported indefinitely for quick editing. Emacs 18 is also important historically, https://www.xemacs.org/Documentation/21.5/html/internals_3.html but I'm not sure why that would matter for Gentoo users.
