You can leverage MAKEOPTS="-j1" so only one core will be used for compiling.

Is upgrading world and having CPU load 100% on public-facing Gentoo server harmful for reliability and stability of running services, especially when many people uses them? If so, does scheduling world upgrades to e.g. night time make problems arising from upgrading world significantly less noticeable?
