It is definitely weird, but it is documented to be that way. From the manual ebuild(5): The version part that comes before the ’*’ must be a valid version in the absence of the ’*’. For example, ’2’ is a valid version and ’2.’ is not. Therefore, ’2*’ is allowed and ’2.*’ is not. Regards, Arve
