I haven't been following this thread as I'm not familiar with xset but this info made me think. Could you have a bad cable? Maybe the plug on the back of the monitor or video card is worn out and not making a good connection? Maybe there is a dust bunny in the connector preventing a good connection. Just a thought. Maybe.
