  The default ISO USB action is to wait a few seconds and then boot the
standard kernel.  Tap "any key" (e.g. spacebar) ***BEFORE THE WAIT TIMES
OUT*** and then type in the line...

gentoo nomodeset

...followed by the {ENTER} key.  That should boot with the nomodeset
option.
