That doesn't prove that the server never retried, it proves that you didn't receive one particular message that was sent from the list. The most common reason for that is that your spam filter blocked the original message, but not the reply. Retries only happen for 4xx errors (like "connection timed out," when the server is down) and not for 5xx errors (like "this is spam, go away").
